WtE incineration plant silencers
A WtE plant is a ‘waste to energy’ plant. Heat released from waste combustion is converted into energy. GMW (Greater Manchester Waste) is the largest waste processing firm in England. The sound level produced by its WtE incineration plant was too high. Large silencers offered the ideal solution.
Large incineration plant silencers
Silencers
- Dimensions of 4 metres wide, 3 metres high and 6.5 metres long.
- The silencers have to cope with a constant flow of dust and gases.
- The result: after installing the silencer the maximum sound level had to be 84 dB(A). Post-installation the sound level is just 78 dB(A), easily achieving the proposed target.
Greater Manchester Waste commissioned Keppel Seghers to develop a new WtE plant. The plant processes 750,000 tonnes of waste a year, which it converts into 70 MW of electricity and 51 MW of heat.
Alara-Lukagro designed, produced and tested the two large silencers for the heat generation station at the plant, where a ventilator ensures the gasses can escape from the incinerator. The silencers are needed to reduce the sound produced by the ventilators, but also have to cope with a constant flow of dust and gases.
After installing the silencers the maximum sound level had to be 84 dB(A). Post-installation the sound level is just 78 dB(A), easily achieving the proposed target.
