Sound attenuated ventilation set for diesel engines
ZF Marine Krimpen B.V. approached Alara-Lukagro seeking a solution to ventilation, noise control and heat management for four diesel engines. Alara-Lukagro designed, produced and installed a sound attenuated ventilation set for the diesel engines.
Caterpillar diesel engines
ZF Marine Krimpen B.V. designs and produces a wide range of steerable thrusters for all kinds of applications in the maritime sector. The company approached Alara-Lukagro in an early stage of a project involving ‘Deck Mounted Azimuth Thrusters’. These thrusters are fitted with Caterpillar diesel engines with the following specifications:
- Cooling air: 5,760 m³/h
- Combustion air: 4,380 m³/h
- Maximum pressure: 150 Pa
Ventilation, noise control and heat management
ZF Marine Krimpen B.V. asked Alara-Lukagro to devise a solution for the ventilation, noise control and heat management of the diesel engines. The challenge for Alara-Lukagro was to come up with a reliable solution with the limited available space, which was also cost efficient.
Sound attenuated ventilation set
Alara-Lukagro proposed a number of options of sound attenuated ventilation sets for the deck units. One of these appeared highly beneficial for the diesel engines. The design ensures optimal cooling of the engines, which perform best at these temperatures.
This sound attenuated ventilation set consisted of:
- Four air inlet sets: acoustic louvres, silencers (stainless steel 316) and Servo engine. The fire extinguishing system is activated automatically in the case of a fire.
- Four air outlet sets: ventilation plenum box (stainless steel 316) with axial ventilator, silencers and acoustic louvres.
