Generator set acoustic air inlet on offshore platform
Pon Power supplied an advanced vital and emergency power supply to the Gina Krog offshore platform. To reduce the noise at the air inlet of the vital power supply Alara-Lukagro produced and delivered an acoustic air inlet set for the engine.
225 million barrels of oil and gas
Gina Krog (previously Dagny) was originally a small offshore-gas discovery in the North Sea (between the North of England and Norway), but appeared to hold substantial quantities of oil under the structure as a whole. Statoil indicates that the Gina Krog development has an estimated value of 225 million barrels of oil and gas.
Emergency power for offshore platform
The Gina Krog offshore platform requires complex vital and emergency power solutions, in accordance with NORSOK regulations. Pon Power supplied Gina Krog with two highly advanced Cat Power solutions. The emergency power generator was supplied in an A60 container with noise emissions of 75 dB at one metre.
The highly advanced Genflex C280-16 vital generator set was engineered by Pon Power, offering a capacity of 5,430 ekW @ 60 Hz and emergency power of 3,512 C HD with a capacity of 1,700 ekW @ 60 Hz. The dimensions of the vital generator set are L x W x H = 10,283 x 2,800 x 4,092 mm and the set weighs approximately 75 tonnes.
Acoustic air inlet for vital generator set
To reduce the noise at the air inlet of the vital power supply Alara-Lukagro designed, produced and supplied a sound attenuated air inlet set for the engine. One of the requirements involved the possibility of installing the complete air inlet unit through the gap in the A60 wall, which resulted in a specially designed air inlet system.
The acoustic air inlet consists of:
- Integrated demister made from seawater resistant aluminium
- Stainless steel duct silencer with A60 insulation
- Filter housing with doors, hinges, flanges and hoisting lugs made from stainless steel
The complete unit was installed as a single component, fully compliant with NORSOK regulations.
Reduced noise level
The mechanical sound pressure level at one metre from the offshore generator can reach a sound level of 109 dB(A). Sound attenuation at the air inlet achieved by Alara-Lukagro’s air inlet system reduced the average noise level produced by the generator by at least 35 dB.
